Abstract
The focus of corporate affairs practice is on the interests of the organisation served by the corporate affairs practitioner, and on how these interests can be sustained, furthered and protected. However, effective corporate affairs practice recognises that corporate interests must be reconciled with other interests, such as those of the community or special interest groups, but this recognition leads to a number of practical problems. These problems relate to the identification of other interests which must be taken into account, and to weighting other interests in management decision‐making. This paper looks at some of these practical corporate affairs management problems and draws on the author's experience to suggest ways in which they can be managed.

Recent research among the corporate communications and public affairs functions of a sample of major public corporations in the UK revealed that 95 per cent felt that issues were handled in a reactive and ad hoc manner. Examines a management and environmental study currently being conducted by Rhône‐Poulenc Agriculture Ltd. Demonstrates how public relations have been employed to help determine the future of the company and illustrates the function in its strategic management role. Illustrates how business analysis and planning models are used to inform the issues management process to ensure it is planned and effective.

Abstract
This article addresses the critical need for exceptional leaders to shepherd the nationʼs Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in a post-Brown era where African American students enjoy unlimited access to higher education in the United States. The article spotlights the many contributions Black colleges and universities have made to American society against insuperable odds since their inception in the mid-nineteenth century. It studies selected examples of HBCUs whose graduates have distinguished themselves in areas where other institutions enjoy centers of excellence. The article traces the historical inequities between major and minority institutions, the challenges HBCUs face in surmounting these disparities, and the growing tendency of Black students to exercise their options by enrolling at White colleges and universities. With the loss of a pure monopoly on African American students, Black colleges now must find leaders of exceptional talent and vision in order to ensure their survival. The article recommends strategies designed to surmount hurdles and enhance the viability of Black colleges and universities in an increasingly competitive environment.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to determine the feasibility of modifying a commercial off‐the‐shelf video game that incorporates elements of information literacy.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper examines six game design elements of educational video games and discusses the resources required to design and build Benevolent Blue, a “modded” video game.
Findings
This paper provides a discussion of the skills, time and funding required to build a “mod” incorporating information literacy.
Research limitations/implications
Although modifying commercial videogames is quite popular, very little discussion or work is written about “modding” and its potential use designing video games for libraries. Further research is required to determine if the knowledge transfer of information literacy skills occurs with players. Additional study could look at incorporating information literacy into video games of different genres and well as the impact that video games have on undergraduate student engagement and satisfaction.
Practical implications
This paper outlines the resources needed to modify a commercial off‐the‐shelf video game and provides suggestions on how others in libraries might do the same.
Originality/value
This paper looks at serious educational games in a new way – the modification of commercial off the shelf games to develop complete game play experiences that sit outside the classroom and emphasize the importance of play.
